HER
Are people’s lives what they seem to be?
(He looks at her)
HER
They walk down the street… and I look at them and I feel like I know them, how they think, and what they do.
HIM
How could you possibly know them?
HER
I just feel like I do.
HIM
Then the answer to your question is no. People’s lives aren’t what they seem to be. You see them but there is so much more going on.
(pause)
HIM
So much more than even what they know about themselves. Because we think so much and we are so unsure of what we think we know, we question everything. Your thoughts change every day, and so does your life.
HER
Yeah, we get lost in analyzing our lives, I do to. But isn’t there a difference between getting lost in details and decisions and ideas that you have in your mind, and being able to simply see a person walking down the street and understanding their context?
HIM
Do you understand their context?
HER
Well, yeah, precisely because you don’t get lost in all the confusion that floats around in your head when you try to understand yourself. You just have one objective idea of what that person’s life looks like.
HIM
But that isn’t enough to really understand someone.
HER
It’s all you need, because all the details and reasons are just extra. We aren’t that important, we can each be summed down to a sentence. We lead a certain life; maybe we leave a mark on some people, maybe we have a family, we work and we learn of what was known before. But nothing is new; everything else is just details that don’t really affect anything.
